8 Picturesque Train Journeys

National Rail has just launched exclusive, relaxing, driver’s eye views of the country’s most beautiful train journeys on its YouTube channel. Releasing new videos every week for six weeks, you’ll be able to see Britain’s most picturesque journeys across Scotland, Wales, Devon and East Anglia.

1. Glasgow to Fort William

Filled with scenes of tranquillity, the Glasgow to Fort William route is considered one of the most scenic journeys in the country. While travelling on this route, you’ll pass the shores of Loch Lomond and the Monessie Gorge, where the railway is built on a ledge along a rocky valley, with the river flowing below. Soon after, you’ll reach Fort William, where Ben Nevis is a stone's throw away.

2. Mallaig to Fort William

The Mallaig to Fort William route takes you on an enchanting trip as you cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct, perhaps most famous for its cameo in the Harry Potter films. After you venture across the magical viaduct, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the highlands, valleys and lochs.

3. Exeter St David's to Paignton

The Exeter to Paignton route provides a beautiful view of the English Rivera, passing through from Paignton through Torquay to Newton Abbot. Keep an eye out for the famous Dawlish seawall that was once washed away after being damaged by stormy weather.

4. Exeter St David's to Okehampton

With stunning views of cities, towns and villages along the line, the route from Exeter St David’s to Okehampton is a relaxing journey filled with so much to see. It’s short but sweet, taking only 40 minutes, but it’s not one to miss.

5. Shrewsbury to Swansea

Also known as the ‘Heart of Wales Line’, the Shrewsbury to Swansea line takes you on a spectacular journey filled with Wales’s most picturesque views. From the viaducts at Cynghordy and Knucklas to the historic castles and idyllic villages, this is truly a beautiful journey worth experiencing.

6. Chester to Shrewsbury

Chester to Shrewsbury line takes you across Wales, with breath-taking views of the Welsh countryside and views of the Dee Valley from the Newbridge Viaduct and of the Ceiriog Valley from the Chirk Viaduct. On this line, you’ll be treated to picturesque views of the World Heritage site at Pontcysyllte.

7. Norwich to Sheringham

This route is popular for a reason. The Norwich to Sheringham line – also known as the Bittern line - treats passengers to the most stunning views of the Norfolk coastal lines and the Norwich broads. Don’t miss the gorgeous views of the scenic beauty of North Norfolk.

8. Lowestoft to Norwich
