Almost 13m Brits still missing out on ‘raily’ good savings

  • Since their launch in 1974, Railcards continue to offer incredible value for customers, saving eligible rail users 1/3 on most rail journeys across Britain
  • Over 7 million Railcard holders currently save an average of £158 each on their rail fares annually, with customers saving almost £1 billion on their rail travel so far this year
  • With over 20m people eligible, and over a third (35%) already benefiting from Railcard savings, make sure you and your loved ones aren’t missing out!

New insight from railcard.co.uk reveals that there are now over 7 million Railcards in circulation, but with over 20 million people in Britain eligible for a Railcard, millions of people are still missing out on saving a third off their travel.

Railcards, which save customers 1/3 on most rail fares across Britain, have continued to be a reliable money saver for rail travellers in 2024. New figures reveal that since January customers have saved almost £1billion (£976.8 million) across over 210 million rail journeys (211.5 million) – the equivalent of travelling the length of Britain nearly 16 million times.

This year, which heralded Railcard’s 50th birthday, saw customers travel nearly 10 billion miles (9.55 billion).

At just £35 a year (or £20 for a Disabled Persons Railcard), customers could make the cost of their Railcard back in just one or two journeys.

Of the 9 different Railcards available from railcard.co.uk, 16-25 Railcard holders made the most savings (£324 million), travelling over 3.35 billion discounted miles - the equivalent of travelling the coastline of Britain 300,000 times.

They were followed closely by Senior Railcard holders, who made over £190 million in savings having travelled over 1.8 billion discounted miles - the equivalent of travelling from London to Aberdeen over 3 million times.

With a Railcard from railcard.co.uk, savings are too good to miss. Not only can you save 1/3 off most rail fares, you can also save with Railcard partners too - from theatre tickets to hotel stays, days out and much more. They even make a great Christmas gift for someone you’d like to travel with by train.

Commenting on the Railcard benefits, Catherine Lyver from railcard.co.uk said:

“We are thrilled to be celebrating 50 years since the introduction of the first Railcard, and the positive impact Railcards have in helping millions of people save on their rail travel each year. Since their introduction in 1974, the rail industry has continued to develop and research products to make leisure travel easier and more affordable. We look forward to continuing to help our customers save money on their rail travel, so they are able to enjoy more of the things they love for less”.
